New nuclear cooperation agreements were signed with Russia in 20, reviving Egypt's plans for a nuclear power and desalination plant, supported by Rosatom. Over 1999-2001 the Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) carried out a feasibility study for a cogeneration plant for electricity and desalination, updating it in 2003. The plan was aborted following the 1986 Chernobyl accident. Germany's KWU, Framatome and Westinghouse tendered to provide reactors for El Dabaa, and Australia and Niger agreed to supply uranium. In 1983 the El Dabaa site on the Mediterranean coast – 170 km west of Alexandria and Zafraana on the Gulf of Suez – was selected to host a nuclear plant. Significant supply constraints arose for several years from 2013 after the government halted new exploration contracts following popular uprisings. Annual domestic production of gas in 2020 was 59 billion cubic metres (bcm) 2, slightly above consumption of 58 bcm. Register below and receive an email providing the Zoom link for the meeting. We look forward to welcoming you on Tuesday, September 14th at 7:00pm via Zoom. We will also share templates for emails and letters to our representatives in Harrisburg and for letters to the editor supporting RGGI. There will be ample time for audience discussion and Q&A. Benefits: Funds available for clean energy and investments in environmental justice communities. How RGGI works and what impact it is likely to have on electric generation and costs.During our meeting Liz and Nora will begin to unpack some of the complexity and will help us understand the benefits and current status of RGGI in Pennsylvania and what we can do to help push RGGI across the finish line. RGGI is a complex regulation with lots of components. Liz has been actively supporting RGGI since its introduction. Liz is an active member of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Eco-Justice Collaborative: Quakers in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware promoting clean energy and economic, racial, and social justice.

Liz Robinson, former Executive Director of the Energy Coordinating Agency Philadelphia, is currently serving as Executive Director of the Philadelphia Solar Energy Association. Nora is the staff person supporting POWER's RGGI Advocacy team and its Public Utility Commission Working Group. Nora Elmarzouky is a climate justice organizer working for POWER Interfaith. In Pennsylvania RGGI has cleared several major hurdles toward implementation but still faces significant opposition.įor our September PA IPL Philadelphia Chapter meeting we have several participants who have been following RGGI since its introduction in Pennsylvania and are very familiar with its provisions and what remains to be done to ensure RGGI's success:īill Cozzens, PA IPL Board member and climate activist with several organizations will be introducing the panelists, providing some background information on RGGI, and moderating the audience discussion and Q&A period. States in New England and the Mid-Atlantic regions that have been part of RGGI for years have reduced their CO2 emissions significantly and have generated major revenue that has been invested in clean energy and other programs to address climate justice. RGGI is a "cap and trade" mechanism for putting a price on CO2 emissions from power plants. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI - pronounced "Reggy") is Governor Wolf's effort to begin cleaning up the Commonwealth's electricity generation. This month's meeting will be a great, high energy inauguration of the Philly Chapter for the 2021-22 year:Ĭleaning Up Pennsylvania's Electric Generation - Pushing RGGI Across the Finish Line! Join Philly PA IPL for our Monthly Chapter Meeting taking place on Tuesday, September 14th at 7:00pm!
